The expanded use of molded plastic and composite components as substitutes for metal in automotive, heavy truck and marine/recreational vehicles inspired OMNOVA Solutions to develop primer and appearance coatings that can be applied in the molding process. Our in-mold coating (IMC) solutions for compression or injection molding applications are an economical method for reducing the cost, time and environmental impact associated with multiple priming, painting and finishing steps.

Pioneer in Technology for Sheet Molding Compound
With our lineage to GenCorp, OMNOVA Solutions has led the development of IMC for SMC (sheet molding compound) compression molding applications for over 25 years. The continued evolution of OMNOVA’s expertise in IMC for compression molding resulted in several patented formulations and provided a starting point for expanding the technology into new applications.
Emerging Technology for Injection Molding
For injection molded thermoplastics, process is as big a part of the equation as the coatings themselves. OMNOVA’s combined expertise in coatings, molding technology, tool design and flow modeling has resulted in the successful development of an IMC system for injection molded parts that is compatible with your existing manufacturing process. Our IMC system has successfully produced in-mold coated parts from a variety of resins, delivering desired appearance and functionality.
Our in-mold coatings business office is located at the OMNOVA Solutions Technology Center in Akron, Ohio. The majority of development, analytical and testing of IMC technology is also carried out at this location. Coatings are manufactured at our plant in nearby Mogadore, Ohio.
