Wallcovering Basics.
Protective Coatings.
Stains become permanent when the staining agent migrates into the vinyl surface to create an unsightly discoloration of both the printed pattern and the base vinyl. But commercial wallcoverings by OMNOVA Solutions resist tough stains, clean up easily and deliver long lasting durability. These value-added qualities are the direct result of our various protective coatings which can be specified with our wallcoverings.
Each of our coatings possesses distinct functional characteristics that address specific end use installations, maintenance needs and budgetary concerns. They are all designed to resist staining by creating a barrier between the staining agent and the wallcovering base, but offer different levels of stain resistance, durability and cleanability.
Choosing the right protective finish can extend the value of our wallcoverings.
Standard Finish Coating
Our basic wallcovering finish. Resists most common stains up to 24 hours. Can be specified in different gloss levels from low to high to create different decorative effects. Recommended for low traffic, low-wear areas.
TowerCote® Protective Coating
A special formulation of an engineered, cross-linked polymer and an advanced urethane. Recently improved to offer 72 hours of stain resistance. Also helps to maintain pattern and color integrity. Recommended for medium traffic areas where exposure to most common soils and staining agents is expected. Can be cleaned with household detergents and isopropyl alcohol but not with solvent-based products, as they may damage the surface.
PreFixx® Protective Coating
A clear liquid polymer coating, offering resistance to most common stains, as well as those in healthcare settings. No staining after seven days from most common staining agents. Many common stains can be cleaned with any non-abrasive cleaner, more difficult stains with a 50/50 mixture of acetone and water. Applies invisibly, so it does not alter color, pattern or luster. Can also be used with deeply embossed and spanished wallcoverings. Suitable for wallcoverings installed in high traffic areas where difficult staining agents will be encountered, such as hospital operating and examination rooms (as well as rooms adjoining these locations), classrooms, hallways and lobbies. Also used extensively in our contract upholstery, marine upholstery, transportation upholstery, and aftermarket upholstery products.
ProTex™ Protective Coating
A proprietary polymer-based coating available as a standard on Bolta, Genon, and Essex stipple wallcoverings. Protective finish keeps wallcovering looking new longer and facilitates easy cleaning of common stains including tough stains like ballpoint ink, shoe polish, lipstick, crayons and blood.
Tedlar® Film
One of the best long-term barriers against a wide range of staining agents. Available on a custom basis, Tedlar film is not a liquid finish, but a thin polyvinyl fluoride film which is laminated to the wallcovering surface. Offers long lasting surface protection and is found to resist staining up to seven days. Durable enough that it can be cleaned with some solvent-based cleaners. As a result, it is suitable for wallcoverings installed in high traffic areas where difficult staining agents will be encountered, such as hospital operating and examination rooms (as well as rooms adjoining these locations), classrooms, hallways and lobbies. Because it is a protective film rather than a liquid finish, Tedlar film is not generally compatible with deeply embossed or spanished wallcoverings.
