Wallcovering Custom Design Process.
OMNOVA’s Custom Design Process is simple and straightforward. Our associates manage the intricacies of the development and production processes so that you can stay focused on the creative aspects of your project. Experience has shown that close communication and collaboration between all parties are the secrets to a productive and satisfying custom design project.

Stage 1: Project Submission
OMNOVA approaches the initial stage of a custom design project as a “fact-finding mission.” All information pertinent to the successful and timely preparation and production of the custom wallcovering is gathered at this stage. Among the many details reviewed and sorted out are the wallcovering’s specification and reproduction requirements, artwork handling and preparation, schedule and project costs. Once all the necessary information is collected, the project gets underway. Our guiding principle at this stage is “well begun is half done.”
A key tool in the collection of pertinent project information is the Custom Wallcovering Styling Request Form which must be completed accurately before a project can begin.
Stage 2: Artwork Preparation
At this stage, creativity meets technology. The designer’s vision – represented in the form of pattern designs, color chips, trend boards and various other graphic elements – must be accurately transformed into a technical process that will faithfully render the vision through a well-crafted combination of ink and vinyl. This is where our experience, and our ever-present approach to communication, pays off. From the beginning, exacting requirements for the preparation of the pattern’s artwork as well as the strict specifications for its color reproduction, scale and design repeats are established. Several production reviews are typically necessary to assure your vision is maintained and expectations are met.
Stage 3: Strike-Off Reviews / Approval
To ensure that the custom pattern has successfully made the transition from artwork to print, OMNOVA’s Custom Design Center will provide you with a printed pre-production proof, also called a “strike-off.” Created using similar color mixing and printing technologies but on a smaller scale, the strike-off provides an accurate representation of a swatch-sized section of the completed pattern. Because of the subjective nature of color perception, this stage often requires a reiterative process, but one that is pursued until you are happy with the results.
Stage 4: Production and Shipping
Once strike-offs are finalized, the project is scheduled for final production. During this stage, essential production resources – printing inks, embossing rollers, printing plates – are obtained and the vinyl base is produced. After weeks of preparation, all the various elements are combined into a single operation where the vinyl substrate is printed, embossed, coated, trimmed and packaged – and your vision becomes reality!
